Keweenaw Histories: Expanding Our Understanding of the Industrial Landscape Through Public History

The history of Michigan's Copper Country has often been told through mines, labor, and industrial achievement. Those stories are important, but they do not fully capture the forces that shaped life in the Keweenaw. Drawing on diaries, court records, photographs, newspapers, and material culture, historian Daniel Wallace reflects on his American Conservation Experience–Mellon Humanities Fellowship and the development of the Keweenaw Histories project. Through exhibits on boarding houses, family homes, and other everyday places, this talk explores how public history can broaden our understanding of what constituted an industrial landscape. Rather than treating these spaces as peripheral to the region's grand narrative, it argues that they were fundamental to the making of both everyday life and industry in Michigan's Copper Country.

The presentation highlights research from Keweenaw Histories, an ongoing digital public history initiative hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. Following the presentation, Dr. Wallace will be joined by University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire faculty and students to discuss student contributions to the project, and the next phase of research exploring the Keweenaw's past.
