"Home Is Where The Dark Is" at Baxter State Park
<p>Join us at Kidney Pond Library for "Home Is Where The Dark Is", a Ranger Talk about the effects of the night sky on ourselves and the wildlife around us. After the talk concludes, we'll head out into the field for a star party! This will include a tour of notable stars and constellations in our summer sky, and telescope and binocular viewing options.</p>
<p>Bring a red (rather than white light) flashlight or headlamp if you have one, and dress for the weather - it's getting chilly at night! Reservations must be made through Baxter State Park in advance if you plan to camp at Kidney Pond Campground. </p>

<p>Are you passionate about nature, science, or simply love exploring the outdoors? Join us for an exciting BioBlitz, where volunteers work together to discover, identify, and record as many plant and animal species as possible!</p>
<p>This fast‑paced community science event is perfect for all experience levels — from seasoned naturalists to curious beginners. Using iNaturalist, volunteers will upload their observations to the "Katahadin Woods and Water National Monument" project.</p>

10th Anniversary Star Party at New England Outdoor Center
<p>Come out to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the designation of Katahdin Woods and Waters at a star party! A Dark Sky Ranger will have telescopes, binoculars, and enthusiasm ready for stargazers on the waterfront point behind River Drivers' Restaurant. Bring weather appropriate clothes, binoculars if you have them, and any questions you have about our night skies!</p>

Bird Walk
<p>Join a ranger to see and hear some of the wide variety of resident and migratory birds found at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, including raptors, warblers and various songbirds. While you walk the paths at Tekαkαpimək Contact Station, you may hear more birds than you can see. Bring binoculars and a device with the Merlin app if you have them.</p>
<p>Paths consist of loose gravel with running and cross slopes up to 6%. The width of the paths ranges from 70" to 86". The distance covered will be approximately 0.25 miles.</p>
<p><strong>Note: Tekαkαpimək Contact Station and its restrooms will not be open during the walk. The closest available vault toilets are at the monument boundary on Swift Brook Road and at the Lunksoos Boat Launch.</strong></p>
Lokalizacja: Meet in front of Tekαkαpimək Contact Station. From exit 264 on Interstate 95, turn north on Maine State Route 158. After 0.2 miles, turn left on Maine State Route 11 (also known as Grindstone Road.) Follow Route 11 for 6.2 miles. Continue straight onto Swift Brook Road (gravel) for 5.1 miles. Turn right onto Contact Station Road (gravel) and continue driving until you reach Tekαkαpimək Contact Station. All roads within the monument are unpaved.

Paddle Party on the East Branch Penobscot River
<p>Come paddle on the East Branch Penobscot River! Rangers will lead a two-hour interpretive canoe program starting at the Lunksoos Boat Launch. Learn about the history and ecology of the area as you enjoy time on the water!</p>
<p>Be sure to bring water, sun and bug protection, and shoes that you're okay with being wet and a little muddy. Stepping in and out of the boats will involve stepping into shallow water, so choose pants that you can roll up, or are okay with being wet. Some participants will be seated in the middle of the canoes, which do not have raised seats. If you aren't physically able to sit on the floor of the canoe, please let us know when you register. </p>
<p>Canoes, paddles, and life jackets will be provided.</p>
<p>Registration is required. To register, send a message with your name and number of participants: <a href="mailto:kaww_info@nps.gov">kaww_info@nps.gov</a>. Registration will be first come, first served. Registration is limited to 12 participants with 3 people per canoe.</p>

Junior Ranger Celebration and BioBlitz
<p>Are you passionate about nature, science, or simply love exploring the outdoors? Join us for an exciting BioBlitz, where volunteers work together to discover, identify, and record as many plant and animal species as possible!</p>
<p>This fast‑paced community science event is perfect for all experience levels — from seasoned naturalists to curious beginners. Using iNaturalist, volunteers will upload their observations to the "Katahadin Woods and Water National Monument" project.</p>
<p>Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants and sleeves (breathable, light-weight), a hat, sunscreen, bug spray or a bug net, and bring food and water! </p>
<p><strong>Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times when volunteering.</strong></p>
<p><strong>iNaturalist app and account are required for BioBlitz participation.</strong></p>

Telescope in Town at Patten Recreation Area
<p>Have you ever seen the moon up close? Join us at the Patten Recreation Area in the baseball field for Telescope in Town night!</p>
<p>Drop by any time from 7:30-9:30pm on Wednesday, August 26th to view the moon through a telescope, learn more about what the moon is and how it affects us here on earth, and chat about night skies with a Dark Sky Ranger!</p>
<p>If it is rainy or too overcast that evening, we will move the event to the next night - Thursday, August 27th. </p>

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
National Public Lands Day
<p>Join the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument community for a celebration of public lands on September 19th, 2026, from 11am to 1pm. </p>
<p>The monument is located within the present and traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation. The land and waters hold special significance to the Penobscot Nation and is inextricably linked with Penobscot culture, ceremonies, oral traditions, language, history, and Indigenous stewardship which continues the respectful relationship with the land and waterways that has gone back more than 11,000 years. Katahdin is a culturally significant place to the Wabanaki people where connecting watersheds provide important travel routes for Wabanaki people of Maine, comprised of Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot Nations.</p>
<p>Participants at our event can expect to draw inspiration from the nature that surrounds them with various artistic activities. Volunteer to clean up the areas around the Tekαkαpimək Contact Station. Learn from the exhibits within the Tekαkαpimək Contact Station, or enjoy a guided nature walk of the area. </p>
