Four Locks Walking Tour

<h2><span data-contrast="auto">Step back in history and rediscover the thriving community of Four Locks fostered by canal commerce at 10:30 am, on Saturday, October 17.  </span></h2> <p><span data-contrast="auto">Join a guide for a one-half mile, round trip walk around the area that once boasted several stores, a school, post office, and other local enterprises.  While today in Four Locks, only a lockhouse, the stonework of four canal locks and a few residences still exist, the program will attempt to “repaint” a busy village tied together with workings of the canal that flowed through it.  </span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p> <p><span data-contrast="auto">Participants should meet at the Four Locks boat ramp parking lot located near Clear Springs, Maryland. The boat ramp can be reached by turning onto Four Locks Road off Maryland Route 56; driving 0.6 miles, and bearing right onto Starliper Road.  Then, drive though the culvert to the boat ramp parking lot.  </span></p>

Dodatkowo mogą odbywać się różne pokazowe zajęcia z epoki wiktoriańskiej, takie jak robienie prania, tłoczenie cydru, przyrządzanie lemoniady, ubijanie masła czy lodów i inne. Odwiedzający mogą brać udział w aktywnościach i skosztować wyników.</p> <p>Otwarte w każdą sobotę i niedzielę od 13:00 do 16:00, od 21 marca do 12 lipca oraz od 16 sierpnia do 12 grudnia. Domek śluzowy będzie zamknięty w przypadku złej pogody.</p>

Lockhouse 44 - Williamsport

<p>Seven days a week, 24 hours a day, in all weather, lockkeepers attended to canal traffic. Lockkeepers were responsible for opening and closing the 74 lift locks along the canal. A lift lock works like a water elevator, raising or lowering a boat 8 to 10 feet. The lockkeeper was given a salary, a lockhouse, and an acre of land for livestock and a garden. Lockhouse 44 is one of little more than a dozen surviving lock houses on the C&amp;O Canal and remains as evidence of a bygone way of life. Harvey Brant, the last lockkeeper at Lock 44, operated the lock from 1915 - 1924. The Brant family left in 1961, decades after canal ceased operations.</p> <p>Today, the lockhouse has been restored and the interior is furnished as it would have been in the 1920s. </p> <p>Our staff and volunteers offer free tours of the lockhouse and grounds at Lock 44. </p> <p><span data-contrast="auto">*Inclement weather, including high winds, rain, and extreme heat may cause tours to be cancelled.</span></p>
